Sticking it Out

It's no secret that I don't love my job. Even my customers can tell and while most sympathize with me and realize very few people love working in retail, some have complained about how I don't look like I'm enjoying myself at work.

I'll tell you a not so secret, secret. I'm not enjoying myself. It's retail, it's a job.

Stuff gets on my nerves and I'm more often than not pretty grumpy after being asked what the best way to show a dog who's boss is, or how someone can treat an eye ulcer without seeing a vet over and over and over again.

So why do I do it?

The answer is that little dog up there at the top of this post. I work this job because it's relatively flexible in hours (well what few I get anyway), it pays me decently, and sometimes I get to bring Iz to work. It allows me to pay for all the things I do with Iz. To an extent anyway. I wish I could do a lot more for her, and even get her a friend.

It is what it is though and every time I come home bitchy because a customer came in 5 minutes to close and made me stay almost half an hour late, I just cuddle up to my special little girly and remember that I'm sticking it out where I am for now so I can keep doing the activities we love to do together.

If something better comes along and it's meant to be it will happen. I'll continue to search but for now, Izzie is my reminder to keep going.

Weirdo Dogs and What We've Been Up To

Izzie is strange. There's just something about her that is odd. She's too aware, too human. She really doesn't act like a "normal" dog, but really what is normal? I don't know. Shes awesome, no doubt about that, but she just isn't very doggy. Maybe it's because compared to customers dogs she's much better trained and socialized. I am pretty sure she's a person reincarnated as a dog.

So what have we been up to?

Well at the start of January we went to an agility seminar with Kathy Keats. It was pretty great, I audited 3/4 sessions and worked Izzie in a baby dog one. She did great, nothing was very challenging for her so it was great to come back to after her break from being broken.

Then we visited the rehab vet up in Calgary. Izzie was glad to see her, but my wallet wasn't! Ouch! Izzie needed it though and it was worth every penny. She was pretty out, completely rotated to her left side. She said this causes issues extending so very well could have caused her tricep issue. That tricep issue could have also caused the neck to be out of the neck being out could have cause the tricep issue. Who knows. Bottom line is it was gone by the chiro appt and she was adjusted and lasered and poked with 2 jabs of traumeel. Feeling good as new we're moving forward to injury prevention which takes me to our next thing!

The last weekend of January we attended a workshop on peanut ball exercises, stretching and conditioning. Izzie did great as we have already been working on the ball for a couple of months. However it was nice to have more eyes on her, especially to point out weak spots. So moving forward from that we have a lot of good stuff to work on and soon she'll be ripped! This will hopefully help her speed and endurance too, I can already see a difference simply in how she stands and even with her weave poles as she's stronger now and has an easier time keeping up with the weaving action.

So that pretty much brings you all up to speed. I'll try and blog more regularly!

Can your weirdo flexi dog do this?

Penny For Your Thoughts?

In Canada, today marks the beginning of the end for the Penny as we are to start moving it out of circulation. I suppose that means this saying is on it's way to becoming obsolete as well!

That's all I've got today. I've been slacking again haha. I'll make myself sit down and write something good tomorrow!

I Forgot

I forgot to blog, I am sorry. Then because I forgot to blog, I forgot what I was going to blog about. Again, my bad. I'm just trapped in a vortex of forgetfulness.

So since I forgot to blog what I forgot I was going to blog, here's something different.

So on Saturday I was originally planning on going up to Calgary to the Alberta Kennel Club Winter Classic dog show to box load for No Non-Scents, but since I wasn't doing anything else or racing I decided I just couldn't afford the trip. Especially after Izzie's chiro vet appointment last Wednesday. That one hurt my bank account but was well worth it.

Anyway since I had a free weekend for the first time like ever, I decided to spend half of it learning about another hobby of mine. Photography. This specific workshop was about editing in Lightroom, which is what I've been poking around on for the past year pretending I know what I'm doing. I found it very informative and learned some new functions to use and different techniques to get certain results. Way cool!

Hopefully through practising these new editing techniques and continuing to work on my photography in general I'll get better at it!

So that's my blog post about something I do other than dog stuff. Although Izzie is in most of my photos. So I guess it kind of still involves dogs. Oh well!

Slacking

It's been two and a half weeks since I wrote anything. Jeeze I'm terrible at blogging.

I promise to write something this weekend as I have the whole weekend off for once! Yay!

So to tide you over here are some dogs wearing an Icelandic sheep tug on their heads. Enjoy!

New Year, New Project

1/52:. Focus and Determination, originally uploaded by mandypug.

I wasn't sure if I would continue and do another year of 52 Weeks for Dogs on Flickr, but ultimately I decided to do it. A lot of people do multiple years, however most have multiple dogs and do a different dog each year. I only have one dog and my imagination and creativity is pretty limited, but that's exactly why I decided to do it. Without a project of some sort and some accountability, I doubt I'd work on creative thinking. It's a skill that I lack not only in my artsy endeavours but in life in general too. I'm not a free thinker, I cannot come up with my own plans and think outside the box. Well damnit, it's time to open that box and dump myself out of it. So here we go, our 52 Weeks of Izzie the Pug - Volume 2 starts!

Looking Back on 2012 and Moving Forward to 2013

My Frenchie... Erm... Pug.

So 2012 has left us so I guess it's time to review a bit. We've travelled farther than we ever have gone together, went to more trials than ever, won more ribbons than ever, made the AAC top dog list for 2012, earned the #4 rank in Canada for rally obedience Pugs, and earned 8 titles while having fun being together as a team.

Titles earned in 2012:
ADC
AADC
AGNS
AGNJS
AGIS
AGIJS
RN
RA

Pretty successful if I do say so myself.

But success isn't only measured in the letters. Izzie has accomplished so much more and grown in ways that aren't measurable by trials and things for which they don't award rosettes or rankings.

The biggest is confidence. Izzie hasn't been the most confident dog, she never used to stick up for herself. There was no desire to play if things got tough. That makes for playing with people too. She's grown leaps and bounds this year however. Who knows what it's from really but personally I believe it's from simply watching and being around other dogs. Specifically Gyp. Or maybe she's just possessed by the Jane collar. Anyway, I believe she learned some things about being brave from Gyp and its funny to watch but Izzie kind of idolizes her. I still have a little piece o' sheep from her tug at the Terry Simons seminar back last January that Izzie still loves to play with because it has Gyp spit on it.

Other than confidence, she's gained experience. We've competed for a full year in agility and she's done three CKC rally trials and even competed in her first race for scenthurdle. We've moved from an inexperienced starters team, to a slightly more experienced masters team that holds their own and from a nervous wreck very novice rally team to one who earns HIC scores and well, is still pretty nervous out there.  I'm working on that.

Dancing into the New Year

I've personally had a few come to jesus moments. Many attitude checks and figurative smacks upside the head or ass kickings from the all mighty instructors, and some times when I've questioned if I'm really doing the right thing. No one can answer that but me, and I don't have a solid answer. But for right now, what I've chosen is the right path for now. It could change, we all know how awesome life is at throwing curveballs, but for now I start believing in myself and my dog and what we're doing because what other people think doesn't matter any more. I'm looking at you, household. There are going to be some changes in routines, rules and schedule. My household may not be on board with some of it but tough, she's my dog.

Some of the changes I plan to implement this year:
- Scheduling: I need to manage my time better. This includes getting my sleep schedule worked out. I work different shifts all the time and never have the same schedule one week to the next so it's hard to fit in my own training or conditioning time with the Pug and hard to motivate myself to get to bed at a good time to wake up earlier to train my dog. Well now it's time to make time. I'll be buying a day planner to help me.
- Rules: I have had none for Izzie really. She's pretty much free reign in the household. I'm going to be a little stricter, not mean but just teaching her to "work" for her rewards. Hopefully this builds more value for rewards in our training in sports.
- Crating: After Izzie came up limping at the last trial I've been strictly crating her when I'm not around to make sure she's not being an idiot. I plan to continue with this. My household is not a fan of this as they believe crates are cruel, but personally I'd rather have my dog somewhere contained and not jumping off things that she shouldn't.
- Conditioning: I've never really had a plan for Izzie. She's skinny but she's not in top condition. I plan to focus more on this in 2013. More moving (but building up to long distances), more peanut ball, more stretching, more tricks. We'll get there together. I ultimately think that getting her into better working condition will have an impact on her speed and confidence in the ring as well.
- Prioritizing: I can't do everything. I frankly don't have the money to train and trial my dog in all the sports I want to in the ways that I want to. So something's gotta give a little in order to focus on my main love and priority this year. Agility. There's going to be plenty of time for Obedience and Rally in the future and I will still work on it as I do find it fun, but I want to focus on Agility and I can't keep bleeding my bank account dry to take lessons in every sport as much as I wish I had unlimited funds to do so.

The Balancing Act

It'll take some time to find the balance. It probably sounds like I'm going to become a drill sergeant but I'm not. In the end Izzie is still my dog and I'm still her human and there will still be plenty of time for us to do nothing but be. That's just as important as her endurance or mastering distance skills or tugging on a piece of icelandic sheep fuzz. I have no specific title goals or training achievements for this year as of yet. The plan is just to train to improve and the winning will take care of itself (I'm pretty sure that's paraphrased from Terry Simons actually).

Anywho... Happy New Year all my readers, hope this year is good to you.

Happy New Year
